From 2010 to 2019, The number of passengers flying from New York to Paris steadily increased by 55%, from 0.58 million to 0.9 million. The Number of passengers flying from Newark has increased by 9% over the last ten years. 2018 saw the most passengers flying from Newark to Paris then it has decreased by 17% from 2018 to 2019. Overall, the number of passengers flying from New York (Newark + JFK) to Paris steadily increased since 2010 with a maximum in 2018.
Seasonal Trend
The number of passengers flying from New York and Newark to Paris follows the same pattern over the quarters. From Q1 (Jan-Mar) to Q2 (April-June), the number of passengers increases notably; from Q2 to Q3 (July-Sept), the number of passengers slightly increases; from Q3 to Q4(Oct-Dec), the number of passengers decreases. As expected, passengers travel more to Paris over the summer.
There are similar monthly trends for flying from New York and from Newark. The least passengers flying is in February both from New York or from Newark. As expected, the number of passengers flying peaks during summer, in the month of August from New York, and in the month of June from Newark. In December, the amount of passengers traveling to Paris from New York and Newark increases slightly, which is coherent with the end of year celebrations.
Airlines
When we look at the airlines flying from New York to Paris in 2019, passengers only had five airlines to choose from: Air France, Norwegian Air, Delta Airlines, American Airlines and XL Airways France.
In the first quarter of 2020, passengers used four of the above five airlines, and XL Airways France wasn’t a popular option.
From New York to Paris, there are two routes: JFK to CDG, JFK to ORY. Air France flies both routes. The most popular route from flying New York to Paris is from JFK to CDG. Elysair d/b/a L’Avion only flies from JFK to ORY, while Norwegian Air Shuttle, Delta Airlines and American Airlines only fly from JFK to CDG.
Flying from Newark to Paris is another option for passengers in the tri-state area.
For passengers flying from Newark to Paris, United Airlines is the most popular option, followed by OPENSKIES SAS and Dreamjet SAS Dba La Compagnie.
Prices
The dataset on this paragraph is from the website Fare Detective. The following chart presents the monthly variability of the average airfare ticket from New-York to Paris, depending on the origin airport (JFK, LGA or NWR) and the arrival airport (CDG or ORY).
Not all the data is available but we can see already a few trends:
- January 2020 was the most expensive month, whatever the origin airport and arrival airport. We can explain it because it was the last holiday before the pandemic hit.
- The data is fragmented due to the closing of airports at some point during the 1st lockdown of the pandemic.
- The prices from the different origin airports and arrival airports follow the same trends. It is equivalent to travel from one or the other.
- The prices don’t follow the usual trend with a clear augmentation over the summer, even though we can see a slight augmentation.
- The prices in November 2020 are between 20 and 65% less compared to November 2019.
It will be interesting to continue following the trend of the price of a ticket from New York to Paris.
